Welcome to The Reservist
Introducing a new community at the intersection of military service, data, and artificial intelligence.
After years of service in the United States Department of War, as both a government civilian and a Reservist, I have come to realize something: there is a massive gap between the military community and the rapidly evolving world of data science and artificial intelligence. And that gap needs to close, to keep us at the top.
That gap is not about talent. Servicemembers are some of the most disciplined, mission-driven, and adaptable professionals in the world. The gap is about access: the right knowledge, the right networks, and the right guidance to effectively utilize data and AI for the benefit of U.S. National Security.
Why This Community Exists
The Reservist was born out of my own experience navigating multiple roles across the DoW and the private sector. In each, I've tried to learn as much as possible about how our DoW works to protect our nation and where technology can free up more time for the mission.
In each role, I looked for every opportunity to streamline how my unit/office/team worked. When AI tools became accessible, it fundamentally changed what a single person could build and automate, and I realized that we need to get this in the hands of my fellow Servicemembers.
This platform will serve as:
- A blog covering topics at the intersection of data, AI, defense, and career development
- A resource hub for Servicemembers looking to break into or level up in the data and AI field
- A community of like-minded professionals who understand the value of service and the power of technology in maintaining the United States' position as the world leader in artificial intelligence and national defense.
Why Join this Community?
Years ago, I had no concept of a container, a shell, a web application / web server, Python, HTML, etc. I started out entirely self-taught, and have never stopped learning. The point of this blog is to assist transitioning Servicemembers, Reservists, and anyone involved in National Defense in becoming tech-literate quickly, using what I've learned to jumpstart that process.
What to Expect
In the coming weeks and months, I will be writing about:
- How to leverage your military experience in data and AI roles
- Technical deep-dives into data engineering, machine learning, and AI tools, tailored for Servicemembers
- Career transition strategies for Active Duty members moving into tech, and Reservists pivoting into tech
Whether you are an Active Duty Servicemember thinking about your next chapter, a Reservist balancing two careers, a Veteran who has already made the jump, or a civilian working in the defense data space, this community is for you.
The skills that make you effective in uniform (critical thinking, problem solving under pressure, attention to detail, and the ability to operate in complex environments) are exactly what the data and AI industry needs. They are what we need in the defense of our nation.
Welcome to The Reservist.
If this resonates with you, join the community or start reading the blog. The mission is just getting started.
